Big Bang Open Their 20th-Anniversary Tour in Goyang

Twenty years is a long time in any pop career, and an eternity in K-pop, where group contracts traditionally run seven years and the industry restocks itself every few seasons. So when Big Bang walked onto the stage at Goyang Stadium on the evening of August 21 to open a world tour, the arithmetic itself was part of the spectacle. The group debuted on August 19, 2006. The concert marked, almost to the day, the second decade of a band that has spent a good chunk of it apart.

What Happened

Big Bang opened its "XX: Cosmos" world tour with a three-night run at Goyang Stadium in Gyeonggi Province, from Friday, August 21 through Sunday, August 23. The three shows drew more than 100,000 people in total. It was the group's first tour of any kind since the "Last Dance" tour wrapped in 2017 — a gap of nine years.

The setlist ran to 32 songs and opened with "Fantastic Baby," the 2012 electronic dance track that remains the group's most-recognized international calling card. From there it moved through the catalogue that made the band's name — "Lies" from 2007, "Haru Haru" from 2008 — and made room for solo and subunit material, including Daesung's 2025 release "Universe." A live band led by producer Wow Jones, whose credits include work with Usher, Rihanna and Post Malone, backed the show rather than the pre-recorded tracks that carry most K-pop stadium productions.

The concert came two days after "BiiiG," the group's first new release in more than four years, which dropped on August 19 — the anniversary date itself. The single topped several streaming charts including Melon's Top 100, and according to the platform drew the largest first-hour listener count of any song released there this year.

Big Bang is now a trio. The band debuted under YG Entertainment as a five-member act with G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung and Seungri. Seungri left in 2019 and T.O.P departed in 2023, and the group has performed as G-Dragon, Taeyang and Daesung since. The 2022 single "Still Life" was the last release before "BiiiG," and there had been no group tour in the interim.

Roughly forty minutes into Sunday's show, G-Dragon addressed the crowd with a line that did most of the emotional work of the evening without needing much elaboration: the group started in 2006, and here they were in 2026. Near the end, Taeyang hinted that "BiiiG" would not be the last of it — that stopping there would make the whole exercise rather small.

Why It Matters

The concert is the visible peak of something considerably larger, and the larger thing is the more interesting story. For roughly two weeks before the shows, Big Bang's anniversary spilled out of the venue and across Seoul in a coordinated campaign involving YG Entertainment, Lotte Department Store, the Songpa District government and the streaming service Coupang Play. There was a drone show and fireworks over the Han River at Yeouido on August 19. There was a roughly five-meter-tall illuminated sculpture of the Bangbong — the band's crown-shaped official light stick — installed on the shore of Seokchon Lake, lit nightly from 8:19 p.m., the anniversary date rendered as a clock time. There was a prequel exhibition inside the Lotte World Mall complex, with media art, themed food and merchandise.

None of this required the artists to show up. That is the point. Songpa District described its lakeside project as a "fandom playground" — a space saturated with a group's imagery and music that fans can visit on their own schedule, without a ticket. It is a category of entertainment product that barely existed a decade ago and is now a standard line item in a major K-pop rollout.

The template belongs, originally, to HYBE, which built the model out at scale with "The City" around BTS's Las Vegas run in 2022 and has since extended it to other artists and cities, most recently under the "The City Arirang" banner this year. YG has run smaller versions before, including a lighting campaign across Seoul landmarks in July 2025 ahead of Blackpink's "Deadline" tour. What is new is less the idea than the degree of institutional buy-in: a district office, a department store chain and a streaming platform all treating a boy band's birthday as shared infrastructure.

The incentives line up cleanly enough. A YG representative told the Korea JoongAng Daily that placing events in publicly accessible spaces reaches beyond the core fandom to the general public, and that the company wanted a scale appropriate to the band's standing. Lotte Department Store, for its part, framed the partnership as a way to position Lotte Town Jamsil as a cultural destination rather than a shopping one — explicitly aimed at overseas visitors, including from Europe.

Read from a distance, this is the K-pop industry solving a problem it created. Stadium capacity is finite and tours are expensive to mount; fandom demand is not finite and increasingly international. A citywide campaign converts a three-night ticketed event into a multi-week free-to-enter one, monetized through retail, tourism, food and merchandise rather than through the box office alone. Whether that is a generous expansion of access or an efficient way to extract spending from people who could not get tickets probably depends on which side of the turnstile you are standing on.

Reaction

The fans arrived early and from far away. Heidi Wong, a 36-year-old who has followed the group for fifteen years, flew in from Hong Kong and landed in Seoul on the anniversary itself, telling the Korea JoongAng Daily that getting into the atmosphere before the concert was itself part of the appeal. She had missed the Han River drone show by hours but went to the Lotte World Mall exhibition anyway, to look at the media art and listen to "BiiiG" in a room built for it.

That posture — showing up for the periphery, not just the main event — recurred across the campaign. On a rainy Friday afternoon at Seokchon Lake, V.I.P., as the fandom is known, gathered with passersby to photograph the giant yellow crown. Wong's summary of the whole thing was disarmingly modest: even small events would have been enough, because the pleasure was partly in seeing other fans turn out. The streaming numbers told a blunter version of the same story. A group that had released nothing in four years pulled the year's biggest opening hour on Korea's dominant music platform, which is less a chart statistic than a headcount of people who had been waiting.

What's Next

The Goyang shows were the opening leg of a much longer run. Big Bang has 33 shows scheduled across 19 cities in North America, Europe, Oceania and Asia. The North American dates include the Oakland Coliseum in California on September 4 and 5, and MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on September 11 — the kind of venues that only a handful of acts from any country can fill, and that no Korean group could realistically have targeted when Big Bang debuted.

The Seoul campaign is not over either. The prequel exhibition at Lotte World Mall closed on Sunday, but a larger multimedia exhibition opened the following day at dududo seoul in central Seoul, extending the anniversary well past the concerts. And there is the music question: Taeyang's closing remark was a fairly direct signal that more material is coming, though YG has not attached a date or format to it.

Closing Thoughts

There is a particular kind of concert that is not really about the songs. Big Bang's catalogue is well-established and its members have all had substantial solo careers; nobody bought a ticket to Goyang Stadium wondering whether "Haru Haru" holds up. What the weekend offered was closer to a reunion with a scoreboard attached — proof, delivered to 100,000 people at once, that a group written off as a historical artifact several times over could still fill a stadium three nights running and top a streaming chart from a standing start.

It is worth being precise about what that proves and what it does not. Big Bang's endurance is genuinely unusual, but it is also the endurance of three individuals who remained culturally present throughout — G-Dragon in particular has never really left the conversation about Korean pop aesthetics. The group's twenty years are not twenty years of continuous group activity. They are twenty years during which the idea of Big Bang stayed legible enough that its return could be treated as an event rather than a curiosity.

That legibility is the asset the whole citywide apparatus was built on. You cannot install a five-meter light stick by a lake and expect strangers to stop and photograph it unless the shape already means something. The Goyang shows were the loud part; the quieter achievement was that a crown-shaped sculpture on a Songpa lakeside required no caption at all.
