CORTIS Mark Their First Year With a 100th Spotify No. 1

One year ago today, a five-member group nobody outside the K-pop trade press had heard of released a song with choreography performed on treadmills. On August 18, 2026, CORTIS turn one — and the anniversary arrives with a set of numbers that would look implausible on a rookie's résumé. Their single "REDRED" reached No. 1 on Spotify's Daily Top Songs: South Korea chart for the 100th time on August 11, a figure Big Hit Music confirmed two days later. No other K-pop group song has ever accumulated that many daily chart-toppers on the platform.

The 100th win was not a sudden spike. "REDRED," the lead single from the group's second EP GREENGREEN, passed 70 daily No. 1s on July 12 — already a record for a K-pop group track — and has simply kept going. On the most recent Weekly Top Songs: South Korea chart, covering July 31 through August 6, it held the top position for a 15th consecutive week. It has spent the same 15 weeks on the global weekly chart. A song released on April 20 is still, four months later, the most-streamed track in its home market on the world's largest streaming service.

The listener base underneath those numbers has grown in a direction that complicates the usual K-pop story. CORTIS crossed 12.9 million monthly Spotify listeners this month, a group record. The country breakdown is the part worth pausing on: the United States comes first, Indonesia second, South Korea third. A Seoul-based act less than a year past debut now draws more monthly listeners abroad than at home, and the largest single share of them sits in the American market.

The album charts moved in the same week. Billboard's August 15-dated ranking, revealed on August 11, showed GREENGREEN re-entering the Billboard 200 at No. 39 in its 13th week — a 75-place jump from the previous week's No. 114. The EP originally debuted at No. 3 in May. It also returned to No. 1 on World Albums and rose to No. 2 on Top Album Sales, making it the second-best-selling album of the week in the United States. "REDRED" held at No. 78 on Global Excl. U.S. and No. 129 on the Global 200, and the group climbed to No. 34 on the Artist 100 in its 17th charting week.

Why It Matters

CORTIS are Big Hit Music's third group, following BTS and TOMORROW X TOGETHER, and the label has never had a rookie run compound this quickly. The debut EP Color Outside the Lines, released September 8, 2025, entered the Billboard 200 at No. 15 — at the time the second-highest debut-album placement by any K-pop act — and moved roughly 250,000 copies on its first day. By March 2026 it had passed two million in cumulative sales, making CORTIS only the second K-pop group after ZEROBASEONE to reach that mark with a debut record.

The scale of the second album is what actually separates this year from a normal strong rookie year. Circle Chart data cited in mid-August put cumulative sales for the group's newer release above 3.36 million copies as of late July. In 2026, only two catalogues have cleared three million domestically: BTS's fifth full-length ARIRANG, and CORTIS. One of those is a group thirteen years into its career. The other has existed for twelve months.

It is worth being precise about what these metrics do and do not prove. Spotify's daily Korean chart is a real measure of streaming behaviour, but Spotify is not the dominant domestic platform — Melon and its peers still carry a large share of Korean listening, so a hundred daily No. 1s partly reflects who uses Spotify in Korea rather than universal saturation. Album sales figures, likewise, are shaped by fan-purchasing patterns and multi-version releases across the entire industry, not by CORTIS specifically. The Billboard 200 leap from 114 to 39 three months after release is the kind of move that sales weeks produce, not streaming demand.

What survives that scrutiny is the geography. Streaming listener distribution is much harder to engineer than a sales week, and CORTIS's is genuinely lopsided toward markets where Korean acts historically had to build for years. Big Hit put the group through a Los Angeles song camp in April and May of 2024, more than a year before debut, and the members are credited across songwriting, production, choreography and video work rather than assigned fixed vocal or rap positions. The company built an act designed to be legible outside Korea, and the listener map suggests it worked faster than planned.

The Reaction

The chart momentum accelerated once the group started playing live. Their first headline tour, 2026 CORTIS TOUR <PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN>, opened in Incheon last month and sold out. The North American leg — promoted by Live Nation across Toronto, New York, Atlanta, Irving, Los Angeles and San Francisco — sold out in full. When a second San Francisco date was added on August 16, it sold out again within an hour.

Before the tour proper began, CORTIS made their US festival debut at Lollapalooza in Chicago's Grant Park on August 1, as the only K-pop boy group on the lineup. Their official aftershow at the House of Blues the night before had already sold out. For a group with two EPs to its name, a Grant Park slot is an unusually early test — festival crowds are not fandom crowds, and the set has to work for people who wandered over between other acts.

The Los Angeles stop became the tour's largest single event. The YouTube Theater show was broadcast live to cinemas in nearly 870 venues across 29 countries on August 13 and 14, with a thirty-minute pre-show attached. Concert films are usually a late-career revenue instrument, reserved for acts with a decade of catalogue. Putting one in theatres eleven months after debut is an aggressive bet on how much audience already exists.

Critical framing has settled around a specific idea. Rolling Stone described the group as "curious about the future, wanting the whole world to know their names." Teen Vogue credited their skate-punk and Y2K styling with "spearheading the Y2K menswear renaissance," while also noting that their debut EP was short and somewhat derivative of its influences. The Korea Herald grouped them with acts building "a distinct identity for themselves through fresh sounds and performances that defy expectations." The praise and the reservation tend to arrive together: promising, self-directed, not yet fully formed.

What Comes Next

The anniversary itself gets a dedicated event. CORTIS will hold 2026 CORTIS TOUR <PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN> BIRTHDAY PARTY at the Hwajeong Gymnasium on the Seoul National University campus on August 22 and 23, closing the first touring cycle where it began — in front of a domestic audience, in a mid-sized hall rather than an arena.

Beyond that, the calendar is open. There is no announced third EP, no confirmed follow-up single, and no stated release window. That silence is itself informative: the standard K-pop response to a hit of this size is a fast repackage, and Big Hit has not signalled one. The group's own working method — members writing, producing and directing across the catalogue — is slower by construction than a label-assembled release, which may explain the gap between GREENGREEN in May and whatever follows.

The harder question is what a second year looks like when the first one has already delivered a Billboard 200 top-three album, a record streaming run, a sold-out continental tour and a cinema release. Rookie momentum has an expiry date. The metric to watch is not whether "REDRED" reaches 150 daily No. 1s, but whether the next single opens anywhere near where this one has settled.

Closing Thoughts

The group's name is an irregular contraction of "Color Outside the Lines," which their agency says "symbolizes the band's commitment to thinking freely." That is standard debut-copy language, and it is usually the first thing a successful group quietly abandons once the machinery around it starts optimising. CORTIS have not abandoned it yet, mostly because they have not had time to.

What makes the first year genuinely unusual is not the record count. It is that the sequence ran in an order K-pop rarely manages: a debut album that charted in the US before the fandom infrastructure existed, an NBA All-Star halftime slot in February that no K-pop group had held before, a festival set at Lollapalooza, and only then a sold-out headline tour. Most groups build the domestic base first and export it. This one appears to have been built for export and is now circling back.

Whether that holds is a question for year two. A hundred daily No. 1s measures how thoroughly one song saturated one platform in one market. It says nothing about whether the people who streamed it will show up for the next release. Twelve months in, CORTIS have proven they can arrive. The interesting part — whether they can stay — starts tomorrow.

2026 CORTIS TOUR <PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN>는 인천 개막 공연과 북미 6개 도시 공연이 모두 매진됐고, 8월 1일 시카고 롤라팔루자에서 미국 페스티벌 데뷔 무대를 치렀습니다.
